RIVER BREAKS MAGGIE

Having used and raised purebred Australian Kelpies for several years for use working cattle on our ranch in the Missouri River Breaks of North-Central Montana, we found ourselves moving to a new ranch on the banks of the Yellowstone River outside of Glendive, Montana. 

On this new place we had an opportunity to get creative wth our ranching operation and the inclusion of sheep was a viable option for several reasons but the real catalist was for training the stock dogs.  Katahdins are a moderately flocking breed suitable for trainig dogs and the fact that they do not need to be sheared, docked or crutched, along with the parasite resistance made them an ideal breed.

We can attest to the fact that sheep truely do forage on very different plants than cattle and actually improve the range over time.  This places them not in competition with the cattle but working together with them to fully utilize the range.

Since the first 20 ewes arrived we have made yearly additions to the herd to include registered animals from top breeders in the region.  While we have obtained good shedding and conformationally correct rams, we have focused on size, bone and muscle- they are meat sheep after all!  Please see our Services Page to find out more about the sheep offered for sale.

RIVER BREAKS PAYNE

We have found the Kelpie to be the ideal stock dog for use on our ranch.  They are tough, trainable dogs that possess great endurance, character and natural instinct.  Our dogs have been bred to be tough enough to work on cattle.

We produce about one litter of pups per year and keep a waiting list year-round.  Prior to breeding everyone on the waiting list will recieve a call to create a waiting list of those ready for a pup at that time.  Deposits are not requested until the pups are born and determined to be healthy.
